stand for

Heritage
With Purpose

Maison Ferrand’s commitment to sustainability, social responsibility, and cultural heritage is deeply rooted in who we are. As farmers and stewards of the land, it’s only natural for us to protect the planet that nourishes us. From France to Barbados, our community is built on shared values: conserving the land, air, and water that sustain our ingredients, and supporting the people who craft them into exceptional spirits.
These principles guide us at every step of our production and distribution, ensuring that what we create is true to our origins, our craft, and our responsibility to the environment.

Certification for our cognac
vineyards

Our ecological approach begins with responsible farming. In our Grande Champagne and Borderies vineyards in Cognac, we are proudly certified HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) for sustainable agricultural practices. We take concrete steps to minimize consumption of resources and protect the ecosystems in and around the fields where we grow grapes for our Ferrand Cognac and Dry Curaçao.

Nurturing Our Terroir

Maison Ferrand is 100% compliant with AOC regulations for water preservation and uses no insecticides on our vines. We also do not mow the ground between each row of plants, because natural growth of native grass helps preserve this special terroir in the Cognac region.

Protecting & enhancing biodiversity

Maison Ferrand’s ambitious agricultural projects include development of 12 hectares of organically grown juniper trees at the Château de Bonbonnet to provide some of the raw materials for Citadelle Gin. In 2024, we completed construction of a magnificent greenhouse next to the Citadelle Distillery. Here we cultivate oranges and lemons to experiment with new varieties and ensure a more sustainable supply in the long term.

The respect for biodiversity that earned Maison Ferrand HVE certification extends beyond our vineyards. We are committed to creating a natural protected area of over 100 hectares around our sites in the Cognac region. This is a long-term solution to preserve the local floral and fauna that help define this exceptional terroir.

Energy transition
at our distilleries

A greener future in Barbados

Smart energy use is an essential part of Maison Ferrand’s production processes. At Stade’s West Indies Rum Distillery, solar panels on our warehouse roofs soak up the Caribbean sunshine to provide 20% of the distillery’s energy needs.

Looking ahead, we are developing an ambitious sustainability project to transform organic production waste from our stills into renewable energy. By converting distillery vinasse into biogas, Stade’s West Indies Rum Distillery will have the capacity to produce enough green electricity to power 4,300 Barbadian homes. The project will also recover heat to generate steam for distillery operations and produce digestate, which will enhance soil fertility for over 1,500 hectares of land. Optimizing waste management in this way, and reducing importation of fertilizers to the island, will reduce the distillery’s environmental impact and bring us even closer to our goal of total carbon neutrality by 2040.

Energy efficiency in France

Our Citadelle distillery at the Château de Bonbonnet has been designed with an efficient closed-loop steam system that is more ecological than direct flame heat.

As part of our broader sustainability efforts, Maison Ferrand has joined the Coq Vert community – a network of over 2,500 French businesses committed to energy and ecological transitions. Our membership reflects the critical progress at our production sites in both France and Barbados as we develop new ways to maximize our energy efficiency and limit our carbon footprint.

Sourcing

Maison Ferrand’s products are made with authentic ingredients sourced all over the world. We hold all our suppliers to the same exacting standards we apply to ourselves, in order to ensure transparency and quality at every step.

Packaging

Maison Ferrand is proud to supply customers in over 120 countries, so we are particularly concerned with delivering our products in the most efficient and planet-friendly way possible.

sustainable sugarcane

For our rums, which originate with sugarcane grown in tropical terroirs, our certifications and partnerships guarantee the highest level of social and ecological integrity. Maison Ferrand, and Stade’s West Indies Rum Distillery in particular, are both certified by BONSUCRO, an international non-profit organization that promotes sustainable sugarcane production, processing and trading as well as equitable working conditions. Their mission is to ensure that responsible sugarcane production benefits individuals, communities and ecosystems in the countries where sugarcane is grown. SWIRD is the first distillery in the CARICOM to earn this certification.

Maison Ferrand invests in collaborative initiatives that will gradually establish a sustainable, local supply chain for our Planteray rums produced by Stade’s West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados. We partner with the West Indies Central Sugarcane Breeding Station (WICSBS), whose mission is to develop new sugarcane varieties for improved yield, quality and resistance. Together, we built the Harper Sugarcane Mill to crush cane juice for joint research on specially adapted cane varieties for making our quality rums. At the Kendal Plantation, we plant and manage our own crops of sustainable sugarcane and coconuts. Additionally, we source coconuts from local farmers, supporting Barbados’ long-term effort to restore robust local agriculture and promote its heritage.

supply chain certifications

In addition to our own vertical sourcing projects, we select partners who share our commitment to sustainable agriculture and ethical work practices. Our partner rum distillery in Fiji, Rum Co. of Fiji, is Fairtrade certified, which guarantees fair and responsible conditions for farmers and workers.

Maison Ferrand is a member of Amfori, an association that identifies, assesses and mitigates environmental risks within supply chains. Amfori’s programs enable us to exercise environmental, social and governance due diligence, enhance transparency, and manage environmental impacts more effectively. Maison Ferrand is also ISO 22000:2018 certified, ensuring effective food safety management throughout our entire supply chain.

Innovative eco-packs

In 2023, Maison Ferrand launched our Ecopouch sustainable package for the Citadelle Gin Original, Planteray Rum Stiggins’ Fancy, Planteray Rum 3 Stars, Planteray Rum Original Dark, and Ferrand Dry Curaçao expressions. These bar classics are shipped to our on-trade customers in 2.8 liter pouches that contain the equivalent of four 70 cl bottles (3L for the US). By eliminating over 110 tons of glass from production each year, we’re reducing our environmental footprint and delivering our products more responsibly.

Maison Ferrand partners with EcoSPIRITS, a circular economy technology company that provides a low-carbon, low-waste distribution system for premium spirits. Their reusable ecoTOTES eliminate single-use packaging and reduce carbon emissions across the supply chain. Maison Ferrand was the first spirits producer to partner with EcoSPIRITS and we continue to collaborate in from France and Spain to Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.

Lighter bottles, local suppliers

In recent years, we have reduced the weight of our bottles by up to 30%. Our bestselling Planteray XO Barbados rum is now packaged in these lighter bottles, which reduce glass consumption and the environmental impact of transporting them to customers. In 2025, Planteray was awarded the Adelphe Trophy for Eco-Responsible Packaging in recognition of our sustainability efforts.

For our packaging, including bottles, labels, and caps, we source 95% of our materials from France, with 76% coming from the Charente and neighboring Nouvelle-Aquitaine regions (data from 2024). By prioritizing French suppliers, Maison Ferrand is able to reduce supply chain distances, transportation costs, lead times, and carbon footprints, while also supporting local economies.

investing
in people

Maison Ferrand and Stade’s West Indies Rum Distillery are certified by BONSUCRO for the beneficial conditions they create for both individuals and communities. Stade’s, and Clarendon Distillery in Jamaica, are also members of SEDEX. This trade organization supports corporate supply chain human rights and environmental due diligence (HREDD) in the areas of health and safety, labor, environment and business ethics. Their solutions are built on international frameworks such as the United Nations Guiding Principles (UNGPs) and the Ethical Trading Initiative’s Base Code.
